MSC Cruises confirmed orders on Monday with French shipyard Chantiers de l’Atlantique to construct two more World-class ships.ย
The pair of ships are expected to be delivered in 2026 and 2027. They would be sister ships to the MSC World Europa, which entered service last December, and the MSC World America, which is scheduled to embark on its maiden cruise on April 12, 2025. MSC still has an option for a fifth World ship.ย
The two ship orders are subject to access to financing.ย
MSC contends that the first two World-class ships are the most energy-efficient in the industry, performing “significantly better” than the International Maritime Organization’s Energy Efficiency Design Index requires. The line said the two new ships will use extensive use of heat recovery and other technology to reduce the ship’s carbon footprint.ย
The ships will be able to use alternative fuels, including bio and synthetic methane and green methanol, and be fitted with “next-generation dual fuel internal combustion engines with reduced methane slip.”ย
The ships will have shore power plug-in connectivity to reduce carbon emissions in port. MSC also said they will include advancements in wastewater treatment systems, waste management and a range of onboard energy-efficient equipment.
