For those unfamiliar with the brand, Hotel du Vin are a small chain found in smaller cities across the UK, and are perfectly designed for a weekend away. Friends and families were all enjoying a stay while we were there – but the hotel really comes into its own for couples. Generous and comfortable beds in well designed rooms, luxurious baths, and a cosy bar make this a great romantic getaway.
We stayed in a Classic Double, which had plenty of space for two.
A huge drench shower was just the thing to warm up after a long day of sightseeing in the crisp autumn weather, and for bath lovers, a deep bath will be too much to resist. L’Occitane products add to the luxury.
Staff couldn’t be more helpful, and social distancing measures are carefully observed and thoughtfully explained with signs throughout.
The hotel even has its own pocket-size hand sanitiser, which was a lifesaver for using while rambling around the city.
FOOD & DRINK
Don’t skip the Bistro, which was buzzing whatever time we visited.
Guests choose a slot for breakfast to ensure the restaurant doesn’t get too busy, and can then enjoy continental offerings and hot dishes, which are ordered and served to the table. Don’t miss the avocado toast – it might be ubiquitous now, but the Hotel du Vin offering really is delicious.
For supper, diners can enjoy a host of bistro classics such as steak or moules frites.
The hotel literally has the word wine in its name, so as you would expect, the selection is exemplary – but since this is Scotland, there is plenty of whisky on offer in the Whisky Snug too, which is decorated in tartan and burgundy leather. The outside area has a cute bothy so guests can enjoy a drink sheltered from the inevitable rain.
While it would be tempting, most who stay at Hotel du Vin are not going to remain in the room, and there is plenty to see and do nearby.
Royal Mile is minutes away, and while it is a tourist hotspot, the history and architecture make it a must-visit.
Edinburgh Castle is also 15 minutes walk from the hotel, and the imposing castle is a fantastic way to learn about the history of Scotland and soak up some of the best views in the city. Due to covid-19, booking ahead online is required.
The National Museum of Scotland is on the hotel’s doorstep, and whether you are a first time visitor or longtime lover of the city, there is something new to discover every time.
Finally, it wouldn’t be a visit to Edinburgh without climbing Arthur’s Seat, the start of which is a few minutes from the hotel. It isn’t easy, but it is worth it for the amazing views.
