Jacka Bakery, in Plymouth, Devon, has been serving customers since 1597 and is widely regarded as one of the best bakeries in the business. But after more than 400 years and overseeing 20 reigning monarchs, the UK’s oldest operating commercial bakery faced uncertainty when lockdown hit last year.

Like several businesses, the Grade-II list building decided to adapt to the unprecedented times as they were not able to serve customers breakfast and brunch in their in-built café.

Meeting the Covid-19 guidelines and restrictions, the bakery transformed into a delicatessen selling jams, chutneys, cheeses and charcuterie.

On their Facebook page earlier this year, Jacka Bakery wrote that the coronavirus had changed the business forever, adding: “We felt it’s only right that we give ourselves an upgrade alongside our refit and new delicatessen.”

With a new target market, Jacka now hopes to become the best in showcasing the best small and independent businesses across the South West.

2Chill user Faith Strickland gave the “cute little shop” in a grade II listed building on Southside Street five stars. She said: “The family-run shop was voted one of the best in the country, baking a range of classic breads, pastries and cakes daily.”

She added that it has a small deli section which “sells the likes of soups, milk and bacon – all perfect for a hearty lunch treat.”

But don’t threat about getting a chance to sample their freshly baked goods, Jacka’s products are used in several local restaurants and cafes across the city.

Just a six-minute walk to the UK’s largest aquarium, Plymouth’s National Marine Aquarium, visitors can grab a tasty treat on a day out.

If taking a step back in time interests you, Plymouth’s museum, art gallery and archive The Box is a place you might also like to check out.
