Greece won the prestigious award for ‘Europe’s leading destination’ at the World Travel Awards. The awards are widely regarded as the Oscars of the travel industry.
Sunshine, idyllic islands, azure waters and delicious food, it’s not difficult to see why Greece won this year’s award.
Greece’s tourism minister, Vassilis Kikilias, said: “Greece managed the pandemic and followed medical and travel protocols in the best possible way, proving to the world that it is the most beautiful but also the safest destination.
“This international award for 2021 comes to confirm that when it comes to tourism we are champions in quality and the travel experience.
“The professionals in the field must prepare for a strong 2022.”
Greece has announced plans to extend its tourist season and attract tourists all year round including during winter.
The country has also reported that tourism levels are almost back to where they were pre-pandemic on the Greek islands.
The Greek islands are extremely popular destinations with British tourists and each offers visitors something unique.
Stunning Santorini is one of the most accessible of Greece’s islands and has incredible black sand beaches.
Tourists can enjoy sunset views and explore one of the world’s most dramatic volcanic calderas.
Upmarket Mykonos is home to hip beach bars and has a thriving LGBT+ scene as well as beautiful beaches.
Milos’s volcanic sand beaches are the perfect place to relax and there’s a frequent ferry service from the mainland.
Foodies should check out Karpathos for freshly baked bread, tzatziki and other delicious specialities.
Tourists have been sharing stunning pictures and videos from their holidays in Greece on social media.
Jon Goldin shared a beautiful video of Mykonos waters at sunset and said: “Off for a sunset dip”.
Sophie Thompson said: “What a gorgeous place” while Guy Wears said: “A lovely week in Mykonos comes to an end.”
David Baez shared a photo on Instagram and said: “What an unforgettable trip to Greece. The sunsets, the landscapes, the food.”
Double vaccinated Britons will need to take a lateral flow on or before day two after arrival in the UK from Greece.
Before travelling to Greece, British travellers will need to complete a passenger locator form and unvaccinated passengers will also need to provide a negative Covid test on arrival.
British tourists are advised to check the latest restrictions on the UK Government website before travelling to Greece.
Greece also won the awards for the leading beach hotel, beach resort and family resort in Europe at the World Travel Awards.
