Need to book a hotel? Here’s how to do it safely
Booking a room in a hotel you aren’t familiar with can often be a gamble. Will it actually have the promised amenities? Will it be quiet? Will it be clean?
That last one is especially important in the era of COVID-19. But how do you feel certain in such uncertain times?
Each year, the American Automobile Association (AAA) inspects and reviews thousands of hotels for cleanliness and other conditions.
Each hotel to receive AAA’s Inspector’s Best of Housekeeping Award has to pass a rigorous on-site inspection that looks for evidence of dirt, dust, pests, equipment performance and more. The hotel also has to demonstrate housekeeping excellence for two consecutive inspections and be free of complaints from AAA members.
With the pandemic still surging in many parts of the country, AAA hasn’t done their annual inspections this year, but offers suggestions for ensuring the hotels on their 2019 list are still up to snuff and doing everything they can to ensure guest safety.

Recommendations from AAA when booking hotel rooms in the era of COVID-19
AAA recommends guests double-check during booking what changes have been made due to COVID-19, including asking if the hotel is taking any extra precautions or has put in place any additional protocols to protect guests.
AAA also advises being proactive. Use disinfecting wipes to clean surfaces in your room — paying extra attention to light switches, door knobs, faucets and remote controls.
