Queen Elizabeth never travels without this item for an unexpected reason

Queen Elizabeth II is a fashion-forward monarch, pictured at events around the world in bright ensembles. One feature of her aesthetic that she is never without is a matching handbag, no matter where she is jetting off to.

However, the reason for this might not be to do with fashion at all.

In fact, one of the reasons the monarch is believed to use her handbag is to do with communication.

According to royal historian Hugo Vickers, the Queen uses the way she is holding her bag to send signals to her staff about how she is feeling in particular situations.

This can be very helpful when making state visits and attending global events.

Though she mostly carries her bag on her left arm for comfort, if she does switch arms, it could have a hidden meaning.

Moving her bag to her right arm while in conversation is a suggestion that she hopes to bring the discourse to an end in a polite way.

Mr Vickers told People magazine: “It would be done very nicely.

“Someone would come along and say, ‘The Archbishop of Canterbury would very much like to meet you.’”

She also uses a similar tactic when at state dinners.

When sitting down to a meal, it is reported that Queen Elizabeth has an under-table hook which she places her bag on beneath where she is seated.

According to The Telegraph, if she decides to move her bag onto the table, it is a signifier that she is wanting to wrap the meal up within the next five minutes.

Along with her handbags, the Queen also travels with a large amount of luggage when travelling to a new destination.

In order to ensure she never loses a single thing, she uses a special colour-coded bag tag system.

Each of the monarch’s suitcases and bags is marked with a yellow tag.

This is labelled simply with the words The Queen.

Other royals also use this system, including Prince William and the Duchess of Cambridge.

While Kate Middleton also uses yellow tags, her husband Prince William uses a red tag.

Prince Charles also uses a red tag, meanwhile, Prince George’s bags are reportedly marked with a blue luggage label.

The tagging system is mostly to help the royal entourage who travel with the family and subsequently carry their luggage.

It ensures no member of the family ends up with the wrong bags being brought to their accommodation.
