The Haunted Bedroom at Talliston, Great Dunmow, Essex, UK

The ‘haunted bedroom’ (top image) in Talliston House and Gardens ‘has been decked out in the style of an Edwardian child’s bedroom’

‘Talliston House and Gardens was once an ordinary house in an ordinary street, but has now been transformed into a Gothic wonderland by its owner and host, John,’ says Airbnb.

It notes that the ‘haunted bedroom’ within the property, which is available to rent on Airbnb, ‘has been decked out in the style of an Edwardian child’s bedroom, complete with books, toys and ephemera’.

Is it actually haunted? The owner previously told The Echo: ‘People ask me all the time if the house is haunted… that really depends if you believe in ghosts. Or if antique furniture and objects can bring with [them] the spirits from the Scottish houses they were sourced from.

‘All I know is when you step into the Edwardian bedchamber the room has a ghostly presence that feels far more than your imagination.’

Sleeping two, the ‘haunted bedroom’ rental is priced from around £145 per night.

Not much is known about the resident ghost, but it is said she once lived in the cottage and could be seen tending the garden, according to Time Out.

Laura’s Cottage is a favourite stop on local ghost tours, the Airbnb listing reveals.

Sleeping four, the rental is priced from around £242 ($293) per night.

Ross Castle’s resident ghost Sabina is said to wander the halls in despair over her lover, who drowned in a nearby lake

This Irish castle, built in the 15th century, is situated one hour from Dublin on the shores of Lough Sheelin, County Meath.

Guests can enjoy the Norman history of the setting and tuck into a home-cooked dinner upon request, the Airbnb listing notes. But, be warned, its resident ghost Sabina is said to wander the halls in despair over her lover, who drowned in a nearby lake, the castle’s website reveals.

It’s no wonder Lonely Planet describes it as one of ’10 lesser-known haunted places in the world’.

Sleeping up to 14 guests, the rental is available for around £1,387 per night.

Riber Hall Manor, Matlock, Derbyshire, UK

Elizabethan manor house Riber Hall Manor is rumoured to contain a secret passageway

‘This recently restored but very atmospheric Elizabethan manor house dates from the 1400s,’ says Airbnb.

The listing says that it’s rumoured a secret passageway connects the building to the village of Dethick. This settlement was home to an English nobleman convicted of plotting the assassination of Elizabeth I and conspiring with the imprisoned Mary, Queen of Scots. The listing notes that Mary Queen of Scots was allegedly detained in Riber Hall.

The guest suite within the manor is complete with a four-poster bed and a ‘luxury’ bathroom, with breakfast served in the 15th-century oak panelled dining room, the listing reveals.

Sleeping two, the rental is available from around £63 per night.

A former chapel, Brookeen Hall in the west of Ireland boasts ‘large Gothic windows’. The rental is available from around £113 per night

Situated just outside Galway city, Brookeen Hall is a former Church of Ireland chapel that was built in 1820.

‘Built in stone, the rectangular hall with its large Gothic windows and solid bell tower can be seen across fields and woodland, making it a distinctive and well-known local landmark,’ the Airbnb listing reveals.

Whilst it might look a little eerie from the outside, its interior has undergone a ‘gorgeous’ restoration, Airbnb says. It can accommodate up to five guests with perks including home-baked goods, a clawfoot bathtub and a reading room in the church bell tower.

The rental is available from around £113 per night.

Library Apartment at Rensow Manor House, Rensow, Germany

The Library Apartment Airbnb rental is housed within the 1690 Rensow Manor House in northern Germany

This atmospheric manor was built in northern Germany in 1690, with its Library Apartment filled with furniture and knick-knacks that have a ‘historic quality’, according to the listing.

Pictures show moody dark walls, shelves piled high with books and Gothic candles. ‘A guest once said that he enters a different world when he stays at Rensow Manor,’ the listing says.

The two-bed rental is available from around £104 per night.

Apartment at Dollarbeg Castle, Dollar, Scotland

Guests may be put off by its haunting exterior, but Dollarbeg Castle is described as the ‘ideal’ location for short romantic getaways

‘From the outside, with its Scottish baronial turrets and elaborate stonework, Dollarbeg Castle could easily be mistaken for a haunted mansion,’ says Airbnb.

However, it notes that the inside of the castle ‘tells a completely different story’.

‘Beautifully’ restored in 2007, the castle is home to a ‘cosy’ two-bedroom apartment that’s said to be ‘ideal for short romantic getaways’.

Sleeping up to four guests, the rental is available from £493 per night.
