Two of UK’s best beaches ranked top 10 in Europe – but you may not have visited them

TripAdvisor has unveiled its “best beaches in Europe” according to travellers, and despite tough competition, it seems two of the most-loved are right here on the UK’s shoreline. However, while well-known spots such as Brighton, Cornwall or Blackpool might spring to mind due to their popularity, the two to make the top 10 might be lesser frequented by the masses.

Luskentyre Beach, situated on the Isle of Harris and Woolacombe Beach nestled on Devon’s coast were voted the third and sixth-best, respectively.

The pair were voted on as part of the 2020 Travellers’ Choice Awards by TripAdvisor and were ranked based on quantity and quality of reviews and ratings left by travellers.

Luskentyre Beach is known for its stunning mountain views, white sandy stretches and crystal clear waters.

It is rarely busy due to its far-off location but is well worth the journey according to voters.

Meanwhile, Woolacombe Beach is a popular surfer’s paradise, boasting three-miles of golden sand and stunning aquamarine rolling surf.

Over the years the Devon hotspot has picked up a number of awards due to its cleanliness and aesthetic appeal.

One TripAdvisor reviewer commented: “Three miles of heaven. In wild weather, it is beautiful. In good weather, it is a delight.”

Though they did not make the top 10, a handful of other UK beaches were also put in the spotlight thanks to a wealth of positive reviews.

Rhossili Bay in Rhossili, Wales, ranked number 11 and St Brelade’s Bay Beach in Jersey just missed the cut, ranking in 12th place.

Taking the crown for the best beach in Europe was Spiaggia Dei Conigli in Lampedusa on the Islands of Sicily.

It was closely followed by Kleftiko Bach in Milos, on the Greek Cyclades islands.

Other beaches to make the top 10 include Playa de Ses Illetes in Formentera on the Balearic Islands; La Concha Beach in San Sebastian, Spain; Elafonissi Beach in Elafonissi, Greece; Cala Mariol in Baunei, Italy; Balos Lagoon in Kissamos, Greece, and Black Sand Beach in Vik, Iceland.

The UK has scored particularly well in TripAdvisors 2020 awards; with one UK B&B being voted the best in the world.

As part of TripAdvisor’s hotel and B&B ranking, a Torquay B&B took the global crown.

The 25 Boutique B&B was voted “Best B&B in the World” for the second year running.

Though it has only been around since 2017, it has won prestigious accolades every year since its creation.

Andy Banner-Price, who co-owns The 25, said: “It’s an incredible feeling to be named the best B&B in the world for the second year running.

“If anything, the second time feels even more special because we know last year’s award raised customer expectations and so we’ve had to work even harder to deliver a great experience for every single one of our guests.”

The “best hotel” in the country was also named by travellers.

According to TripAdvisor’s 2020 Travellers Choice Awards, it is nestled on the shores of quaint Welsh seaside town Llandudno.

Lawton & Lauriston Court Hotel took the crown as the nation’s favourite hotel, also ranking the third best hotel in Europe and the 13th best hotel in the world.

Carol-Lynn Robbins, director at the Lawton & Lauriston Court Hotel, said: “To say we are delighted is an understatement.

“We are a family-run hotel and have a great team who complement our ‘nothing is any trouble’ approach.

“We’ve been grateful to win so many of Travellers Choice awards over the years, and every year we have used that as the spark to improve and grow the business.

“To now earn the number one spot in the Top Hotels category, against some incredible competition across the UK, and to know that it is all down to the feedback from our own guests, it really does make all the hard work worthwhile.”
