‘Wonderful’ town is the best in Wales and perfect for an autumn staycation

As the UK enters the autumn season, it might be time to explore an inland town instead of spending time at the coast. Luckily, the expert team at Which? Travel have named the best UK inland staycation destinations.

Although Wells took the top spot on the UK-wide list, a stunning spot was named the best destination in Wales.

Llangollen, which sits on the banks of the River Dee in Denbighshire, topped the list in Wales.

The town got an amazing five out of five stars for scenery and attractiveness. Those high ratings are hardly surprising as Llangollen sits on the edge of the Dee Valley Area of Outstanding Beauty.

But what’s there to do in Llangollen?

Llangollen’s top rated attraction on Tripadvisor is Plas Newydd Historic House and Gardens, which was home to the ‘Ladies of Llangollen’.

Miss Sarah Ponsonby and Lady Eleanor Butler shot to fame in Regency England when they ran away and set up home together in Llangollen. The pair turned a simple cottage into a wonderland of oak carvings and stained glass.

‘Voodoo Queen’ wrote: “Fantastic experience. The house was wonderful and the story of the two ladies inspiring. Will revisit.”

‘Houlihan2’ said: “What a spectacular mass of purple and yellow heather covering miles of hills, where you’re right on top of the world! With sheep dotted around amongst the heather, you can climb the hills to the highest point to gain even better views.”
